UK Business Bank Accounts Compared: Fees and Features (2026)

Compare UK business account fees, plan limits, protection and accounting connections using current provider information, without untested rankings.

Best business bank accounts UK 2026 compared for SMEs and sole traders

Editorial correction — 14 October 2026: Earlier targeted corrections have now been expanded to a full-body source review. The full comparison corrects outdated Monzo, Tide, Lloyds and Starling claims, replaces historical Kinetic assumptions with HSBC’s current range, and removes unsupported rankings and approval guarantees.

A business account should fit your legal entity, payment methods and record-keeping process. This comparison covers published product terms; it is not a tested ranking or a promise of acceptance or borrowing.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began on 6 April 2026 for eligible sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income exceeded £50,000 in 2024/25. An automatic bank feed can simplify bookkeeping, but it is not itself a legal requirement. Check who is in scope and HMRC’s digital-record requirements before choosing software.

We reviewed current provider information and corrected outdated fees and feature claims. No account applications, support-speed benchmark or financial suitability assessment were performed.

What to Look for in a UK Business Bank Account

Before comparing accounts, it helps to be clear on what actually matters for a UK business in 2026. The market has broadened to the point where choosing on brand name alone is a significant mistake.

FSCS deposit protection is £120,000 per eligible depositor, per UK-authorised bank, building society or credit union, following the increase on 1 December 2025. Accounts sharing a banking licence share the limit. Check the actual deposit provider and eligibility; FCA regulation alone does not establish deposit protection. PRA protection guidance.

Monthly fees versus transaction costs require honest assessment. Some accounts appear free at headline level but charge per transfer or per cash deposit. For businesses processing high transaction volumes — retail, hospitality, contractors — the true cost of a “free” account can exceed a paid plan within months.

Accounting connection: check the exact software, plan and bank-feed availability. A bank feed can reduce data entry, but it is not itself an HMRC filing service or a legal prerequisite for MTD.

Invoice workflow: distinguish creating an invoice, collecting a payment and recording it in accounts. A banking app may cover some of these functions without replacing a full accounting product.

International payments: compare the currency, exchange-rate markup, transfer fee, intermediary charges and eligibility for your actual payment. Neither a traditional-bank nor a challenger label establishes the cheapest route.

Terms checked on 14 October 2026. The monthly fee is only one part of the cost; confirm transaction charges, VAT where applicable, limits and current eligibility before applying.

Starling Business — Monthly Fee and Service Scope

Starling offers a UK business account with no monthly account fee. Compare the payment services you need rather than interpreting that as a guarantee that every transaction is free.

Starling’s fee guidance lists free standard UK payment services and separate charges for some services. Cash handling and other exceptions must be checked in the current tariff.

Check the exact accounting connector and permissions against your software subscription. We have not measured Starling’s feed reliability against other banks.

Use a demonstration or your own acceptance checklist to assess notifications, categorisation and invoice handling. The bank’s accounting tools do not remove the need to review tax and bookkeeping records.

Borrowing, foreign-currency accounts and international payments have separate eligibility and charging rules. Do not infer access to them from current-account approval.

Shortlist according to your entity, payment volume and access needs; there is no verified 50-employee suitability limit or universal winner in this review.

Monthly account fee: £0. Eligible deposits are protected under the applicable FSCS limits; protection is not an unlimited guarantee.

For a direct head-to-head comparison, see our Starling vs Tide UK business account breakdown.

Tide — Account Issuer and Plan Terms

Tide offers a business finance platform with different account and plan terms. Assess the exact account issuer and services available to you.

Tide advertises a digital application, but verification can require additional information. No provider here guarantees that an account will be opened the same day or accepts every credit profile.

The current Tide plan comparison uses Free, Smart, Pro and Max. The older Plus/Pro prices and a universal 20-free-transfer assumption have been removed. Included transfers and other charges depend on the chosen plan.

Invoice, payment and accounting tools have separate limits and terms. Calculate the total cost for your own incoming and outgoing payment volume; cashback does not make every activity free.

We have not independently benchmarked support response times or established that Tide has lower limits than every alternative. Check your actual account’s limits before a payroll or supplier run.

A possible shortlist option where business administration tools are useful, subject to verification, account eligibility and the relevant plan.

Protection: identify whether your account is a ClearBank bank account or a PPS e-money account. Bank-deposit protection and e-money safeguarding are different arrangements.

Monzo Business — Lite, Pro and Team

Monzo offers business plans with different administration features. Match the plan to the controls and access you need.

The current Monzo comparison distinguishes free Lite from paid Pro and Team. Automatic tax pots and invoicing should not be assumed to be included in every tier.

Monzo currently lists Pro at £9 per month and Team from £25 per month. Check the full fee information and the feature allowance for the selected plan.

Monzo does offer business overdrafts for eligible sole traders. Approval, limit and interest are subject to assessment; this is not available to every business entity.

Test the app and permissions with your required process. This guide has not measured a superior interface or a universal best choice.

Monthly account fee: Lite £0; paid plans have separate fees. Check eligible-deposit protection and banking-licence aggregation with the FSCS rather than assuming each account has a separate limit.

HSBC — Check the Current Account Range

The former Kinetic product URL now redirects to HSBC’s current account comparison. We have therefore removed the old Kinetic fee and feature claims as a basis for a new application.

HSBC currently distinguishes its Small Business Banking Account from its Business Banking Account. The former advertises no monthly fee and free standard UK digital transactions; other charges apply.

Check the current account’s online access, accounting connection and payment features directly. A historic Kinetic description does not verify the current product.

Current-account approval does not guarantee finance. HSBC states that borrowing is subject to application and checks and that most loans do not require maintaining its current account.

Consider the current HSBC range if its service and payment arrangements fit your needs. Compare the specific account and tariff, not just the bank’s wider lending catalogue.

Price check: use the current HSBC account comparison and Business Price List; do not rely on the previous £6.50 Kinetic quotation.

Lloyds Business — Tariffs and Cash Services

If in-person banking or cash handling matters, check the branches and services you can actually use, their charges and opening hours.

Lloyds’ current new-business offer advertises 12 months without a monthly fee for eligible new customers, then £10 per month. Cash and other non-standard transactions have separate charges; existing tariffs can differ.

Compare electronic payments, cash handling, access permissions and borrowing terms separately. A relationship manager or current account does not guarantee a loan.

Lloyds can be included in a shortlist where its specific services fit. Obtain a cost estimate using your actual transactions.

Price check: the earlier generic £8.50 quotation has been removed. Confirm which current or legacy tariff applies to you.

Barclays Business — Verify the Current Tariff

Check Barclays’ current business account range and obtain its applicable tariff before making a shortlist decision. We could not confirm the previous £8.50 quotation from an accessible current primary page during this review.

Opening an account is not evidence that a startup will qualify for finance or receive a faster lending decision. Any lending scheme has separate terms and eligibility.

Do not rely on the old blanket monthly price or assume an introductory offer applies to every applicant. Ask for the full account tariff and offer conditions.

Compare account services and any borrowing application separately. This review does not establish Barclays as the best startup-funding option.

Current fee: not quoted here because the accessible primary evidence was insufficient to verify the old figure.

Compare Account Services, Not Bank Categories

Digital-first and branch-based providers both vary by account. Compare the service you need rather than treating either group as the winner on fees, technology or support.

A lower monthly fee may be offset by transaction, cash, FX or software charges. Build a realistic monthly cost example before choosing.

If borrowing matters, compare the lender’s eligibility, total cost and conditions. A prior banking relationship is not a promise of approval.

This comparison does not establish an AI-banking capability advantage. The previous cross-link to a withdrawn banking article has been removed.

Business Bank Accounts and Accounting Software Integration

Use the exact accounting product, region and plan when checking compatibility. Ask what data is transferred and how reconnection or duplicate transactions are handled.

No comparative feed-reliability test was performed for this guide. Test a small set of transactions and the correction process before relying on a connection.

Accounting software choice and bank choice are related but separate. Our accounting comparison provides selection questions, not certification of every bank connection.

MTD requires the applicable digital records and compatible software. A bank feed is optional; choose a reliable record-keeping process rather than assuming a particular bank makes a business compliant.

Payroll and MTD Compliance Considerations

If you pay staff, verify payment authority, upload formats, transaction limits and processing deadlines. Payroll software and bank payments perform different functions.

Check the actual plan’s batch-payment and approval capabilities. We have not established a universal bank-by-bank maximum or that all listed accounts support every payroll workflow.

MTD for Income Tax requires appropriate digital records and compatible software for submissions. Bank feeds are optional aids, and records may need corrections or additional details. Where more than one record-keeping product is used, follow HMRC’s digital-link rules. Our Sage vs Xero comparison is a separate software comparison.

Which UK Business Bank Account Should You Choose?

Start with eligibility: confirm legal entity, trading activity, residency and ownership requirements.

Calculate costs: include subscriptions, payments, cash, cards, FX and software extras using your own volumes.

Check control: test account access, payment approvals and leaver permissions.

Check records: verify statements, exports and the chosen accounting connection.

Check resilience: understand support, protection arrangements and what happens if a payment or connection fails.

The result should be a shortlist suited to your business. This review does not identify a universally best bank or guarantee an application outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate business bank account as a sole trader in the UK? Keeping business transactions separate can make bookkeeping easier. MTD for Income Tax is a digital-record and compatible-software obligation for individuals in scope; it does not make an automatic bank feed mandatory. Check your bank’s account-use terms and HMRC’s eligibility guidance.

Are challenger bank business accounts FSCS protected? Check the provider and product. Eligible bank deposits have £120,000 protection per depositor per authorised bank. Tide’s ClearBank bank accounts must be distinguished from e-money accounts. Tide explains the account types; FSCS explains business eligibility.

Opening times depend on identity and business verification and any additional checks. Provider marketing about quick applications is not an individual approval guarantee.

For an eligible switch, confirm that both providers and your account participate in the Current Account Switch Service. Its business guide says to allow seven working days; do not assume every account or payment arrangement is covered.

What happens above the £120,000 FSCS deposit limit? Check aggregate exposure across accounts sharing a licence. A sole trader’s personal and business balances share the limit; an eligible separate company has its own protection. Qualifying temporary high balances can receive up to £1.4 million for six months, subject to specific conditions; ordinary business reserves are not automatically covered. Business protection; current limits.

If you are also evaluating accounting software, our Xero vs QuickBooks UK comparison covers plan limits, features and workflow checks to support a shortlist decision.

Product information rechecked on 14 October 2026; the original publication date is retained. Confirm current terms directly before opening an account.
